More Than a Hundred People Danced Against Corruption at Sziget Festival

Transparency International Hungary shook up festival goers with an out of the ordinary flashmob at Sziget’s World Music Main Stage to raise awareness to the importance of the fight against corruption. Those who wish for a corruption-free Hungary danced together with ambassadors, journalists, and festival goers alike.

Since the goal of the anti-corruption NGO’s annual summer campaign is to shake up the younger generation from inactivity, every festival goer who values a clean public sector was invited for a collective dance to fight corruption together.

Transparency International Hungary thinks that boosting the anti-corruption awareness of youths will actively contribute to a Hungary without consequence-free corruption. That’s why they attend Sziget Festival; where a substantial number of youths can be reached and be heard, and where these youths can be educated against corruption in a fun and innovative manner.

We would like to explain to them what corruption really is, how it can be identified and what kinds of corruption-risks can they encounter during their everyday lives. To support this we made a “handbook” which they can read in just a few minutes and acquire the knowledge to help them identify and fight corruption.” –said Emese Hortobágyi head of people engagement programs at Transparency International Hungary.

According to the results of this year’s Global Corruption Barometer 71% of those interviewed thought that ordinary people play a large part in the fight against corruption. Stressing this the organization thought it a good idea to conduct an awareness campaign in the summer with dancing as a central element. “It’s time to get moving and act against corruption” was the slogan under which they created a choreography in cooperation with the dance formation Appril Project; which they presented at a huge flashmob event in front of the World Music Main Stage. TI’s executive director, the British and Norwegian ambassadors, and the chargé d`affaires of the Dutch embassy all danced together with more than 100 festival goers.

“Dance is a great tool to get the younger generation’s attention since it’s a universally liked activity. It energizes you, moves you and wakes you up. That’s exactly what we need right now: we shouldn’t think that nothing can be done against corruption. Although sometimes it may seem like a Sisyphean task, we must actively act against it together.” –added Emese Hortobágyi.

Hungarians have viewed their country as corrupt for a long time now but only a very slim minority is able or willing to act against it. TI thinks its duty to wake people up because Hungary can only be made equitable through cooperation.” –said József Péter Martin executive director of Transparency International Hungary.
